GLDA Series

GLDA – Biodegradable Chelation for Sustainable Formulations

A readily biodegradable, environmentally preferable chelating agent that effectively binds metal ions and enables the transition from conventional chelators toward more sustainable chemistry.

Introduction

GLDA (Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate) is a biodegradable aminopolycarboxylate chelating agent derived from glutamic acid. It is designed to bind metal ions such as calcium, magnesium, iron and copper, helping maintain their solubility and prevent unwanted precipitation. GLDA is increasingly used as a sustainable alternative to conventional chelating agents where biodegradability, renewable feedstock and improved environmental profile are important considerations.

Usage

GLDA is used to:

  • Chelate calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and other metal ions.
  • Control hardness and prevent metal-ion precipitation.
  • Improve cleaning and detergent performance.
  • Stabilize formulations containing metal-sensitive ingredients.
  • Support effective performance across a broad pH range.
  • Replace less environmentally preferable chelating agents in suitable applications.

Practical Industry Applications

1. Detergents & Home Care: Used in laundry detergents, dishwashing products, surface cleaners and industrial cleaning formulations to soften water and improve cleaning efficiency.

2. Personal Care & Cosmetics: Used to bind trace metal ions, improve formulation stability and help protect products from metal-catalyzed degradation.

3. Agriculture: Used in micronutrient formulations to improve the stability and availability of nutrients such as iron, zinc, manganese and copper.

4. Industrial Cleaning: Applied in cleaners and process chemicals where hardness ions and metal deposits can reduce cleaning effectiveness.

5. Water Treatment: Used for metal-ion control and hardness management in selected water-treatment applications.

6. Pulp, Paper & Textile: Helps control metal ions that can interfere with bleaching, dyeing and other chemical processes.

7. Sustainable Formulations: GLDA is particularly relevant for manufacturers seeking to replace conventional chelators with more biodegradable and environmentally compatible alternatives.

In practical terms, GLDA represents an important bridge toward the next generation of green chelation—combining effective metal-ion control with a significantly more favorable environmental profile.
